Engaged Students

We engage students with meaningful, rigorous academics, hands-on teaching, lessons infused with art, music and movement. As educators, we care about both the process — joyful, active learning — and the result: independent thinkers who act with purpose and compassion.

Long-Term View

Our approach is not just to cover material, we uncover the gifts and potential of each child. We look beyond helping students to meet the challenges of today, and also ask what they need to meet the unknown challenges of tomorrow. Waldorf Education is education for life.

A major highlight of the recent weeks was our four A major highlight of the recent weeks was our fourth-grade field trip to the aquarium. Each fourth grader selected and researched an animal they might encounter, identifying its genus and species and gathering information about its habitat, diet, social life, life cycle, predators, and other interesting facts. Students practiced synthesizing this research into clear, organized notes that could later be transformed into Main Lesson Book work.
Our fifth and sixth grades had the opportunity to Our fifth and sixth grades had the opportunity to create a business and present their business proposal to the Waldorf School of Moraine Bank and its Board of Trustees. The proposals were colorful, detailed, and full of creative thinking, reflecting both the students’ imagination and their growing understanding of business math.

Our first graders are visiting the Kingdom of Numb Our first graders are visiting the Kingdom of Numbers, ruled by King Counting and Queen Equals. Within the kingdom live Prince Plus, Princess Minus, Duke Divide, and Princess Multiply. Each of these four characters has a personality that aligns with the meaning of the operation in their name. Prince Plus gathers more and more together, such as gems, coins, or cookies. Princess Minus has holes in her pockets and is frequently losing things. Also, with her tender heart, she loves to give things away. Duke Divide uses his sword to cut things into equal and fair portions. Princess Multiply does magical cartwheels and when she does, sets of objects suddenly duplicate. Through these characters, the students are beginning to learn the meaning behind the four operations and how we write each symbol along with numerals to create simple equations.
Our students are always on the lookout for a good Our students are always on the lookout for a good climbing tree. Climbing trees helps build balance, gross motor skills, and confidence. This confidence doesn't stay in the tree; students take this confidence with them to the classroom and to so many other areas of their lives.
Much current thinking in the education field suppo Much current thinking in the education field supports what Waldorf schools have been doing for nearly a century — experiential learning, place-based learning and kinesthetic learning, to name just a few techniques. We apply these insights, making every lesson active and engaging. The successful results are seen in our highly imaginative, self-motivated students, who approach learning with curiosity, discipline and enthusiasm.

Fifth grade has been engaged in a business math bl Fifth grade has been engaged in a business math block during morning lesson. In math class they have been focused on percents—converting decimals and fractions into percents, and working with all three types of percent problems: finding the percent, finding the part, and finding the whole. In the weeks ahead, they will expand their study to include using cash, debit cards, and lines of credit, as well as simple and compound interest.
Formal celebrations of the seasons are important i Formal celebrations of the seasons are important in Waldorf schools; however, informal celebrations are just as special. Last week, our students arrived to find the campus covered in the first snowflakes of the season. Students celebrated by making snow angels and drawing in the freshly fallen snow. ❄💙
Together, we prepare for this time of deep mid-win Together, we prepare for this time of deep mid-winter, and as we find our way in this darkest of seasons, we continue to house and nurture our inner light and keep it aflame. The spiral of light is a celebration of each person finding their inner light and then sharing it with the whole group. By following the spiral we experience movement through the darkness toward the inner light. The light we then carry outwards helps illuminate our way and when we leave it in just the right spot, it lights the way for others.
