The solar panel stationed in the Quad is a miniature solar power system. It presents a great opportunity for students looking to learn about solar power. The panel charges a 12-volt battery via a Victron controller to generate enough DC power for the rope lights under the canopy, and the data can be harvested via an app on a smartphone. Best of all, the alumni parent who designed and built the system, Peter Morse, is available to help students or faculty who want to develop their understanding of the system. It’s a great opportunity to comprehend at a basic level the way solar power turns into electricity and ideally, to come up with other ideas for future solar power on campus.
