The Importance of Character

September 13 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Educating a child to have character is an essential, not a secondary, pursuit in Waldorf Education. Waldorf educators believe that the skills and attributes that comprise character provide the foundation our children need to be both happy and successful in our rapidly changing 21st century.

The Importance of Character

Phillips Academy graduates and Waldorf parents, Caroline Horner (PA’90), Jon Cosco (PA’89), and Suzanne Wright (PA’85) invite you to visit Phillips Academy for a community address and discussion on “What is Character?” with Angela Duckworth, PhD, bestselling author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, University of Pennsylvania professor, and Character Lab Founder and CEO.

The discussion will take place on Wednesday, September 13, 6:30 -7:30 p.m., at Phillips Academy in Andover with a Q&A and book signing to follow.

In her talk, Duckworth will explain the importance of three different kinds of character strengths:

  • Interpersonal strengths, such as gratitude, enable harmonious relationships with other people.
  • Intrapersonal strengths, such as grit and self-control, enable achievement.
  • Intellectual strengths, such as curiosity, enable a fecund and free life of the mind.

Our group will gather after the presentation for approximately 30 min to share our own reflections on how the processes of character development are reflected in a Waldorf education.

If you would like to attend, please email Larissa Mils with your name and number of tickets by Tuesday, September 12 —space is limited!
