Why learn to knit a pair of socks when you can just pick up a pair at the mall? For one thing, when you finish a handwork project you have a real feeling of accomplishment and pride. It’s so simple, so analog, but knitting a pair of socks builds focus, self-discipline and patience. What’s more knitting and other handwork activities strengthen fine motor skills, improve memory and challenge the brain in a way that screen time can’t touch.
So all our children learn to work with their hands — from finger knitting in Kindergarten to machine sewing their own shirts or pajamas in eighth grade. (An Eighth Grade Fashion Show is not to be missed!)
